Emily came to with a start, the back of her head hurt so bad she felt like she was going to puke. Her head was backed into something, leaving her neck kinked at an odd angle, and there was a heavy weight on her legs. She could hear only a high-pitched ringing sound.
She struggled to pull herself into a sitting position. Once she made it she took a deep breath and looked down to find the source of the weight. Bentley was laying across her lower body. When she looked to her left she leaned over and vomited. She waited a moment and wretched again. The pain in her head was immense and the mess beside her horrific.
She glanced to the right and saw Drew standing there with Travis’s shotgun in his hands. His face was pale and Emily could see that he was shaking.
Anna, Travis and Jimmy suddenly appeared from the hallway. The ringing in her ears was starting to subside.
“Holy son of a bitch, what in the hell happened in here and where’d your dog come from? I’ve only been gone for like an hour!” Travis yelled clearly disturbed by the scene before him.
Drew glanced up at him with a look on his face that made Emily sob. “He wasn’t human anymore, I had to do it. He would have killed her. He’s not human, he’s not. He wasn’t.” He said trying to reassure himself.
Bentley slowly got off of Emily’s legs, crawled up and licked her face and nuzzled into her side. It was clear that she was freaked out by the situation too.
“Look at my fucking kitchen, man why did it have to be in my kitchen? I loved it in here man.” Travis said taking in the mess that lay before them.
Dennis was missing the top half of his head. Brains, tissue and blood covered the surface of the wall and cupboards that were behind him. A large puddle was forming below where he now lay. The cupboard was completely missing one side. Drew always had been an excellent shot. Emily laughed at the absurdity of the thought. Then she couldn’t stop laughing.
The laughing quickly turned into sobs and then she felt as if she couldn’t breathe. Anna was suddenly kneeling beside her rubbing her back. “Let’s all move into the living room. We can come clean up in here in a bit.” She said addressing the room.
Anna stood and reached her hand out to Emily. Emily worked hard to try and control her breathing, she stood, felt a sharp stab of pain at the back of her head, turned and vomited again.
“Fabulous, more nasty to clean up.” Travis said shaking his head. “Somebody has some serious explaining to do here.” He added turning to leave the room.
When they reached the living room, Drew, still had the rifle clutched in his hands. “Let me take that from you man.” Travis said grabbing the weapon, Drew gave it up as if he hadn’t even realized he was holding it.
